Support Island Boy Night at Chile Verde

Featuring the TEMPOS!

Benefiting Friends of Indy Animals

Chile Verde Mexican Restaurant (7369 Shadeland Ave, Indianapolis 46250) hosts Island Boy Night approximately 6 times a year, featuring the Tempos (your favorite rock & roll band featuring Dean Metcalf, a long-time animal welfare advocate and board member of Friends of Indy Animals). Chile Verde donates 29% of your pre-tax, pre-tip bill to Friends of Indy Animals. FOIA is a nonprofit organization that raises money to benefit Indianapolis Animal Care Services – Indy’s city animal shelter. And in loving memory of his pup Island Boy, Mike Shinn (also long-time animal welfare advocate and FOUNDER of Friends of Indy Animals) will match that 29% with another 29% bringing the total amount matched to 58%.

IN ORDER TO PARTICIPATE, YOU MUST TELL THE CASHIER YOU ARE PARTICIPATING IN ISLAND

Why Island Boy Night?

Island Boy

Island Boy was Mike Shinn’s very special Chocolate Lab who was born on February 29, 2000 and was adopted by Mike on May 5, 2000. He was not only a leap day and leap year baby, but he was also adopted on Cinco de Mayo.

Island Boy was an unbelievable best friend whose time here on earth ended way too soon.  He was diagnosed with bone cancer in March 2008 and sadly passed on September 29, 2008. Between his diagnosis and his passing, through the valiant efforts of the Purdue Small Animal Hospital and the use of palliative radiation therapy, Island Boy was able to have a pain free summer that included many long hikes and adventures – most notably the week he spent in a cabin on Kentucky Lake with Mike, his best dog friend Nubis, and his dog mom Teran Kennard.

In his memory, the first Island Boy fundraiser was held July 29th , 2011. When Mike came up with the idea to honor him this way, his friend Memo Cuevas, the owner of Chile Verde, offered to donate 40% of their proceeds on each Island Boy Night.  Mike, being the shrewd businessman that he is, countered that in honor of Island Boy’s Leap Day Baby status – that Memo do 29% and Mike would offer a matching 29% to make it a total of 58% each night.  Over the course of time, The Tempos offered to play for the party free of charge!

This benefit for Friends of Indy Animals is now in its 13th year and has raised over $9,500 to benefit Indianapolis Animal Care Services (not bad for eating some delicious Mexican food and chasing it down with a Margarita or three.)
